I took a beginner class to learn the basics. It is really simple to learn and then you just add more and more as you get comfortable with stuff. The best patterns to start with are the Hunter which is a Bonnie Blue Pattern and The Johnny which is a Children's Corner pattern. Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck.
